  CABLE TV AT THE FOREFRONT

Deborah A. Lathen, Chief of the Cable Services Bureau of

communications services, known as broadband.

THE PAGER SERVICES OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA

  The CGC Communicator recently asked:

"What company provides your paging service, do you receive
pages reliably and where do you receive the pages (give us
general area descriptions like L.A., San Diego and San Bernardino).
Have you had bad luck with any particular paging company? Send
us an e-mail....."

In response to this survey request, 11 letters were received
covering 12 paging companies. The results are as follows:

  Pagenet - 6 Favorable Responses
  Airtouch - 2 Favorable Responses
  Metrocall - 1 Favorable Response
  Skytel - 1 Favorable Response
  Mobilecomm - 1 Favorable & 1 Unfavorable Response.

Obviously, there were not enough responses to cross the
threshold of statistical significance, but the comments were
interesting and should help guide those considering new pager
services. The individual letters are posted at:

  http://12.30.171.148/cgc/

  Click on "Additional Postings,"
then click on "The Pager Services of Southern California."

  Thanks to all who participated.

  MODIFIED REPORTING FORMAT

Each broadcast station in the U.S. has a "Facility I.D.
Number" associated with it. A station can change its call
sign as often as it likes, but the Facility I.D. Number sticks,
much like a social security number.

Facility I.D. Numbers now appear in FCC Applications & Actions
  releases, see below (e.g. KRAZ = 33439).

To find out the number associated with your station, visit:

  THE END OF MORSE

When shore-to-ship CW stations KPH/KFS signed off for the
last time on July 12, it was the end of commercial Morse code
in North America (see CGC #338). Richard Dillman, W6AWO, was
present to memorialize the event. Read his gripping first person
account at:

  http://12.30.171.148/cgc/

Click on Additional Postings, then click on The End of Morse.

ARRL BOARD ADOPTS NEW LEAGUE IDENTITY

The Amateur Radio Relay League (ARRL) Board of Directors
has unanimously approved the use of a new identity for the League.
The Board accepted the recommendation of the ARRL Executive
Committee to emphasize the initials "ARRL" in conjunction with
the tag line "The national association for Amateur Radio."

The new identity--which is not a legal name change--
will appear on League correspondence and publications. The
traditional--and legal--name will be retained but de-emphasized;
a new ARRL letterhead design includes "American Radio Relay
League" at the bottom.

[Following is a clever technical joke which will probably
garner a broad smile from anyone who can be convinced to try it.

CRT SCREEN DOUBLES AS A TV CAMERA

LOS ANGELES: Broadcast engineers at one of the new digital
television stations have discovered that a computer CRT screen
will often double as a low resolution TV camera. Generally, the
CRT must be less than five years old and have color capability.
Turns out that objects close to the CRT will reflect a small
amount of light which changes the impedance of the phosphors
when the electron beam is rescanned. Flat displays won't work
for this application.

To see if your CRT will act as a camera, sit with your face
about one foot in front of the CRT, move the mouse cursor inside
the "Photo Now" box below, hit the Enter key on your keyboard and
sit still for 15 seconds. Then, go to the following web address
to pick up your photo:
