FCC BEGINS IMPLEMENTATION OF SATELLITE HOME VIEWER
  IMPROVEMENT ACT

The FCC has launched the first of several proceedings to
implement the Satellite Home Viewer Improvement Act (SHVIA).
This law allows satellite carriers to transmit local television
broadcast signals into local markets. The Commission can also
make recommendations on the Grade B signal standard and improve
the ILLR computer model that predicts signal strength at a
household.

  RADIO STATION PHOTO TOUR CONTINUES

Last week we announced that KRTO photos were posted on the
web, ready and available for viewing. Other feature attractions,
such as KFI(AM) photos, were promised for the near future.

This week we visit the KACE(FM) studio and the KACE/KTYM
transmitter site:

http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumIndex?u=33595&a=993828

It turns out that CGC Communicator readers are very inquisitive
people. As of Wednesday morning, the KRTO pictures had taken 295
hits, and 266 of you figured out how to jump ahead to the KFI
photos. We'll keep that in mind next time we post pictures!

For the benefit of those interested in following our tour
and not jumping ahead, next week we'll visit KOST(FM) in Los
Angeles, then in the following week move to KFI. Thanks again
to Marvin Collins for furnishing the pictures and captions.

  CURIOUS EXPERIMENTAL ACTIONS

  WB2XBE - THE BOEING COMPANY
New experimental to operate in the 5 GHz band for demonstration
of proof of concept to transmit microwave energy and convert it to
electrical power.  Fixed: Simi Valley, CA.  (This is an old concept;
the receiving antennas that convert RF into commercial power are
called "rectennas," short for rectifier & antenna. Environmental
concerns include the question of, "What happens if the incoming
power beam gets misdirected and lands on me?" -Ed.)

WB2XAQ - MOTOROLA SATELLITE COMMUNICATIONS, INC.
New experimental to develop a cellular system for export that
uses aircraft as a "bent pipe" to relay signals from base station
to ground, instead of using terrestrial repeaters.
Mobile: Page, AZ

  WB2XDN - IMMERSION ENTERTAINMENT L.L.C.
New experimental to operate in 470-746 MHz for testing of a
video and audio distribution system on vacant UHF channels to be
used at motosporting events. Mobile: Various motor sports
racetracks in the Continental United States....
