8VSB: STILL CAN'T COMPETE WITH COFDM

After testing the latest model DTV receivers from Thompson
& Sony over the past month, Sinclair Broadcast Group says they
aren't significantly better in fighting multipath than the early
Panasonic & Pioneer units which Sinclair tested last summer.

THE CGC COMMUNICATOR COVERS ENGINEERING ISSUES, MOSTLY

A new CGC Communicator reader recently commented that our
publication seems to leave out many legal and programming issues.
We assured him that the omission was intentional. We simply
concentrate on broadcast engineering issues (and miscellaneous
other topics) of interest to a local and influential technical
audience - just as we have been doing for over 25 years. We
explained that the CGC Communicator was never intended to be a
replacement for traditional media, but merely a supplement to it.

STOP USING FCC FORM 313 FOR 944 MHZ AND ABOVE

The FCC has told me to pass the word to all broadcasters
to stop using FCC Form 313 for 944 MHz and above. You should
use Form 601. You can still use Form 313 for 26, 161, 166, 170,
450-451 & 455-456 MHz bands until these go over the ULS.

  THE KRTO/KACE/KOST/KFI PHOTO TOUR CONCLUDES

In case there is anyone who has not yet seen the KOST and
KFI photos by "looking ahead," they may be seen at:

This concludes our formal tour of these stations. Thanks
for participating!

HOW POPULAR WERE THE KRTO/KACE/KOST/KFI PHOTOS?

According to Marvin Collins, Chief Engineer of the above
stations, here is a list of how many "picture hits" were
attributed to the announcements made in the CGC Communicator
newsletters. The data are current as of 1/14/2000 @ 8:30 p.m.:

  KRTO Xmtr 378

  KACE/KTYM Xmtr 375
  KACE Studio 274

  KFI Xmtr 626
  KFI Studio 315
  KFI Stimuland 97

  KOST Xmtr 223
  KOST Studio 84

  LCF Fire 24

As expected, the KFI transmitter was the clear winner.

STATION PHOTOS FOR A LAY AUDIENCE

  Steve Blodgett writes:

"I'm convinced that one of the challenges that engineers
have always faced is communicating to other management level
people about the mysterious and mystical world of engineering.
In general, they have no idea of the complexity of our stations
or the care required to keep us operating."

To narrow the gap, Steve has prepared a series of web postings
to document the technical aspects of his stations for a non-
technical audience. He adds, "Frankly, I'm surprised at the level
of interest and comment (from our own station personnel); the site
has proven to be a terrific way to communicate and inform."
