TOUR OF THE HISTORIC KMPC(AM) TRANSMITTER PLANT

If you enjoyed the KFI photos published a few weeks ago,
this photographic tour of the old KMPC/Los Angeles RCA 50-F
transmitter plant will be a real thrill. See magnificent
"Frankenstein" rectifier jugs, view RF tubes that routinely
lasted 80,000 hours and find evidence everywhere of an
unmistakable pride of workmanship:

Once again, our thanks to Marvin Collins for putting an
outstanding album together. And thanks to Steve Blodgett for
providing detailed descriptions with each photo.

  THE FCC'S SECRET Y2K PROBLEM

The FCC created a gigantic Y2K problem by decommissioning its
reliable FM Engineering Database computer on December 31, 1999
and replacing it with another computer and a brand new data format
the very next day - with little or no notice. The number of
station records has jumped from 28,000 to 62,000 because archived
(obsolete) records have been added. As of early last week, the
new database had numerous errors (starting with the very first
record), the Section 73.215 (directional) flag was missing and the
Comments were absent without leave and not expected to return soon.

Unfortunately for FM, most of the Commission's repair efforts
are being directed at their AM Engineering Database which is in
even worse shape! We are using the Commission's December 31, 1999
FM database until the new offering undergoes surgery and can stand
on its own feet. Hopefully the many conscientious programmers at
the Commission will get us back on track soon, but they need more
people on the job, and a Public Notice to tell everyone what is
going on. We encourage you to let the FCC know that prompt
repairs are urgently needed.

FREE LPFM SHORT SPACING STUDIES - BUT BEWARE

The following web site is running Beta Test Software for
finding Low Power FM (LPFM) channels, and the service is free:

  http://www.recnet.com/rec/lpfm/chs-rec.htm

There are several cautions. This program is using the latest
(error-prone) FCC database. Searches are being made against both
current station and expired (archived) FCC records meaning that
some LPFM "holes" will go unidentified because expired records
are getting protection they don't deserve. Finally, the LPFM
program improperly includes "occupied" allocations in its search
routine; vacant allocations should be ignored if an operating
station is already assigned to the frequency.

On the positive side, the program is very easy to use,
and the programmers say they are working on improvements.

  EARLY PHOTOS OF KHJ(AM) WANTED

I have been researching the history of KHJ(AM), 930 kHz,
Los Angeles, and would like to obtain copies of pictures from
your readers.... particularly those of a more technical nature.
I have a big hole in our collection from when the station was at
7th and Bixel in LA from 1928 to 1939.

  WHAT'S ON CHANNEL 24?

Sometimes I see ZDTV on Channel 24 here in Ventura, sometimes
religious programming and other times no modulation at all. I
caught the tail end of an ID with Ventura in it, once. The only
Channel 24 I can find listed locally is in San Bernardino, which
should not make it over the mountains. Do you have a clue as to
what I am seeing?

  Thanks, Chuck Felts, cfelts@soca.com

  LARSEN ANTENNA FOUNDER PASSES AWAY

Larsen Antenna Founder Leland J. "Jim" Larsen, K7GE, died
February 3. He would have turned 82 later this month. An ARRL
member, Larsen had been a ham for more than 67 years. He was a
contester and DXer, enjoyed CW, and was a member of the First-Class
CW Operators Club. Paul Nyland, K7PN, described Larsen as an
"experimenter and mad scientist" - unquestionably flattering terms
for those of us in the field. Services were held February 8.
