HUMAN EXPOSURE TO RF SIGNALS: 9/2000 COMPLIANCE DEADLINE LOOMS

Most RF transmitters must already be operated in compliance
with the FCC's human exposure to radiofrequency (RF) signal rules.
However, certain "devices, facilities and operations" could
postpone compliance until September 1, 2000. Be sure you are
ready for this final deadline:

REC RADIO IMPROVES LPFM SEARCH TOOL

Rec Radio is testing improved on-line software to identify
channels where LPFM stations can be dropped in. The revised
software properly ignores "USED" US FM allocations because they
do not require protection. Rec notes that this may open up some
previously undiscovered "holes" with new channel opportunities
particularly for LP-10 stations.

  Rec's main URL <http://www.recnet.com/rec/lpfm/chs-rec.htm>
may become unavailable. The alternate address is:

  CGC URL VANISHES

CGC's web page address has vanished for reasons beyond our
control. Users who are aware of the Bext shortcut have a back
door entrance and may continue to use that URL for now. Higher
priority projects prevent our resolving the public address
problem soon.

CGC's web site contains archived newsletters, long-form
stories, a list of local tower riggers and a simple word search
engine. No additional long-form postings will be accepted until
the address problem is resolved. We regret any inconvenience.

  TOPOZONE TIPS

Regarding the TopoZone USGS map site:

  http://www.topozone.com/

....you do NOT have to know the name of the USGS map you
are after. Even a common place name like "Pacific Beach" or
an obscure locale like "Ponto" will do. Topozone will then find
all maps where that name appears, give you a list of the maps
and let you choose the one you want.

(Edited reply from Dr. Thomas Chester, Cal Tech)

  ______

Perhaps you have not noticed, but a "bug" in their software
prevents printing the maps using Internet Explorer. Thanks for
passing the URL along. - Lew Collins, W1GXT

  RE XLNC (90.7 MHZ, TIJUANA)

It saddens me to see the fringe coverage of grandfathered
stations like KRTH, KTWV, KPFK (90.7 MHz) and others impacted
by new drop-in stations like XLNC. Years ago, the FCC should
have gone to an allocation scheme that protected grandfathered
coverage patterns. Major antenna farms supporting these
powerhouse stations have been in place for over forty years.

THANK YOU FOR THE KMPC PHOTOS

Thanks for the photos of the old KMPC RCA transmitter.
I often drive past their facilities and have wondered just what
was inside. In 1963 I worked for KOGO Radio 600 is San Diego.
They had a RCA BTA-5F 5kW transmitter that used the same 892R
tubes; two as modulators and one as the RF amplifier. The output
cabinet had room for a second 892R that could be installed if
the station ever went to 10kW. With the phasing section it
occupied four large cabinets. It was really a "bullet proof"
transmitter.

HAM SATELLITE RECONFIGURED AS AN FM VOICE REPEATER

Amateur Radio satellite UO-14 is now operating as a full
duplex voice repeater. The uplink is 145.975 MHz, and the
downlink is 435.070 MHz. No more than 5 W is required to make
contact when the satellite is in view. Some have made the
trip with as little as 1.5 W.
