SOFTWARE DEFINED RADIO (SDR) - A NEW CONCEPT

SDR is a new generation of radio equipment under development
that can be quickly reprogrammed to transmit and receive on any
frequency within a wide range using virtually any transmission
format. The technology will potentially allow communications
equipment to add service features without changes to the hardware.

Despite this inspiring FCC pronouncement, the program resulted
in at least one station's application being dismissed for no valid
reason whatsoever with a truly unkind rejection letter.

  FCC INSPECTED OUR EAS GEAR

Today I had a surprise inspection from the Enforcement
Division of the FCC. The Inspector was only worried about
EAS. She asked what our tone length was and looked at all
of our paperwork. Then she had the operator run an EAS test.

We got a perfect score. When this station was tested two
years before I was the CE, their score was 0 since they did not
even have any EAS equipment.

  RE THE RETURN OF KHJ

The KHJ call sign story is GREAT! What an argument (see
CGC #379)! I never would have guessed the Commission would
buy that...and at the same time setting a precedent allowing
a return of the three letter call sign!

Hopefully the station owners (present and/or future owners)
will never let those great historic call letters disappear again!

SEE "MISSION TO MARS" IN DIGITAL CINEMA

The Walt Disney Corporation is featuring TI's DLP Cinema
technology in all digital screenings of its new movie, "Mission
to Mars." The screenings began Friday, March 10.

Hollywood, CA: The El Capitan Theatre
Los Angeles, CA: AMC Media Center 6 (Burbank)
Los Angeles, CA: Edwards, Irvine Spectrum 21 Megaplex (Irvine)

If you haven't had a chance to see what 24 fps high definition
on a large screen looks like, I strongly suggest taking a trip to
one of the theaters listed above. Make sure it is a "digital
presentation" as some theaters are running the film print also.
