  INTERNET & BROADCASTING

"...If my view of Internet space is accurate, then television
broadcasters are in an extremely good position not only to
transmit traditional entertainment video services in digital
format, but also to use the powerful multiplexing capabilities
of digital transmission to deliver frequently accessed Internet
content as well." See Dale Hatfield's complete speech as prepared
for delivery at NAB 2000:

  NEW CHIEF AT KADY-TV, OXNARD

CGC welcomes Ed ("Sparks") Slimak, W4EAS, to southern
California as the new CE of KADY-TV. Actually, he has been
with us since October 31, 1999 to help improve station operations.

a Broadcast Consultant working on AM/FM/SW/HF stations on an
as-needed basis. See and read more about his many talents at:

KEN MILLER TO RETIRE FROM KRTH

Some of you might not have known, but the recent Job Shoppe
opening at KRTH/Los Angeles (CGC #383) was to fill Ken Miller's
slot. Ken is about to retire, and he and his wife Marjorie plan
to relocate "somewhere to the East." They are looking at the
Texas Hill Country to the Northwest of Austin and also at the
mountain areas of extreme North Georgia, and the Panhandle of
North Carolina.

We are certainly going to miss Ken who has been Engineering
Supervisor at K-EARTH 101 since 1978, and a real icon in our area.
Catch him before he leaves: kmiller@cbs.com

AM COVERAGE PATTERNS AVAILABLE ON THE WEB?

Does anyone know of a free web site featuring daytime and
interference-free nighttime coverage contours for AM broadcast
stations? I can find sites showing antenna field patterns but
understand that they are not the same as coverage patterns.
Coverage patterns projected onto base maps is what I need.

  NAB GOODIES

Items that caught my attention at NAB 2000:

  1. Dialite's new Side Light LED replacement "lamp"...
very cool. They were showing it at the Hilton.

  2. The Harris re-make of the DX-50...great improvements in
that box...everyone that has the old one will want to replace it.

  3. The Neutrik SOLDER-LESS XLR Connectors...neat. Their
75 Ohm BNC's need mention also.

COMMENTS ON THE LETTER ENTITLED, "FBI & CIA FILES ON YOU?"

One reader commented that the above captioned April Fool's
web site mentioned in CGC #384 was humorous, but two readers
complained: One person was upset because the site was an obvious
hoax, the other because it contained an alleged link to
pornographic material.

The provider of the web address writes: "I never would have
passed the URL along to the group (let alone my mother and
grandmother) if I had known of such a link." CGC regrets the
incident and has removed the letter from the web-posted version
of CGC #384.

  DIFFERENT VIEWS OF THE SUN

Our sun may look like a uniformly-lit disk in white light,
but comes alive with spectacular turbulence when viewed in the
ultraviolet and x-ray bands. See for yourself:

ANTENNAS: THE BIG ONE IN CHICAGO

The windy city will soon be home to the world's tallest
building-mounted broadcast antenna. This as Chicago's Sears
Tower adds twenty-two feet to one of its twin digital television
antennas to create the world's highest broadcast antenna atop
a building at 1,729 feet. The new antenna will be more than
a foot taller than the one adorning the World Trade Center
in New York City. (Q-News, Newsline)
