  IMPROVED COOPERATION WITH MEXICO

When a San Diego ham radio operator noticed a spur
from a Tijuana FM station drifting close to a U.S. military
communications channel recently, he called CGC. We, in turn,
had the problem confirmed, then notified the Mexican licensee
whose programming was heard near 139 MHz. The station manager
immediately asked his Chief Engineer to investigate.

Armed with a spectrum analyzer, the spur was confirmed and
traced to a foreign-made P.A. tube recently installed in their
high power FM broadcast transmitter. Switching to an Eimac
tube solved the problem, no FCC intervention required.

This episode highlights a new and improved level of
cooperation with Mexico, and illustrates how their experienced
people, with sophisticated test equipment, can confirm and solve
problems on short order. Special thanks to Alex Diaz and
Raymundo Martinez for their help in this case.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR (NINE LINE LIMIT)
******************************************************************

  A WEALTH OF FINE LETTERS!

Many thanks to our readers who responded in large number to
the subjects of GPS, LPFM, ULS and, of course, Power Cord 101.
The letters are posted at the following URL courtesy of
Bext Corporation:

  http://www.bext.com/cgc99/2000/letters.htm

GPS users are reminded that the FCC still uses "NAD27"
as the coordinate datum for almost all broadcast work. Be
sure your GPS is configured correctly. Select "NAD 27 CONUS"
in the continental U.S.

  POWER CORD 101

It is nice to read that a member of the FCC has a sense of
humor on the Power Cord 101 topic, see CGC #388. But, like some
of the (audiophile) magazine hype, I wonder how many folks will
take his comments seriously?

  Bill Wysock, N6UXW, wysock@ttr.com

[No one should take the Power Cord 101 Letters to the
Editor (CGC #388) seriously. The authors are skilled engineers
having fun with a wonderful off-the-wall topic. However, one
serious letter on the subject of AC power quality appears in
the Letters to the Editor (Bext) file mentioned above. -Ed.]

  CORRECTION

In a Letter to the Editor from Wes Becker (CGC# 388),
the FCC's LPFM URL is missing a colon. The correct URL is:

  NINE SHORT LINE LIMIT

Every once in a while we waive our 'nine short line' limit
for Letters to the Editor of the CGC Communicator. Last week
was one of those exceptions triggered by the decommissioning
of GPS Selective Availability.

Please help us now by returning to the nine line limit.
We want your letters read, and brevity is the key. Thanks!
