  SECOND THOUGHTS ON ENG/RPU SAFETY

Because of the safety issues associated with the Adrienne
Alpert ENG accident, the CGC Communicator plans to publish a
follow-up newsletter on this subject this Wednesday.

One seasoned engineer has already filed a long-form letter
cautioning Communicator readers to not go overboard in providing
protective interlocking devices - some of which may backfire and
DECREASE safety in the long run. Stay tuned.

SPREADING THE WORD ON ENG/RPU SAFETY

I took the liberty of forwarding a complete, unedited copy
of CGC #393 to the entire Clear Channel radio engineer mail list.
I also requested that they copy all others that have anything to
do with mast-equipped vehicles.

One would think that a single well publicized unfortunate
incident would be enough to reawaken the industry to the hazards
of overhead wires and mobile masts, but the (injury) count
continues to go up almost weekly.

Al Kenyon, VP Technology, Clear Channel Radio

  INVISIBLE FORCE FIELD

David Swenson of 3M Corporation describes an anomaly where
workers encountered a strange "invisible wall" in the area under
a fast-moving sheet of electrically charged polypropylene film
in a factory. This "invisible wall" was strong enough to prevent
humans from passing through. A person near the "wall" was unable
to turn, and so had to walk backwards to retreat from it.

HAM RADIO 76 GHZ DISTANCE RECORD SET

A group of United Kingdom hams has set a new distance
record for the 76 GHz band on May 6: 17 km (10 miles). The
weather conditions were variable, with almost total loss of
signal as a rain shower passed through. Mist was present all
the time, with visibility never exceeding 5 km.
