AN EPIDEMIC OF TV ANTENNA PREAMPS IN SELF-OSCILLATION?

Ham radio operators have stumbled upon what may be an
epidemic of TV antenna preamplifiers that have broken into
self-oscillation. These devices act as miniature transmitters,
drifting in frequency and causing RFI in the 400-500 and 800-1000
MHz ranges (rough numbers).

The specific devices are alleged to be recently manufactured
recreational vehicle TV antenna/preamp combinations made by one
company. To read more, see:

  http://www.bext.com/cgc/
  Click on 'Additional Postings'
  Click on story entitled,
"RFI From Self-Oscillating Recreational Vehicle TV...."

While the postings appear to be authentic, we have given the
manufacturer an opportunity to respond. Please do not jump to
any hasty conclusions. On the other hand, it would not hurt if
you visited a local RV sales yard with a spectrum analyzer to
see for yourself what is (or is not) being radiated in our area.
Many of the preamps are reportedly energized all the time, and
are therefore broadcasting continuously. Let us know your
findings.

ABC JOINS NBC AS 8-VSB CRITIC

ABC has publicly expressed its unhappiness with the U.S.'s
current digital TV broadcast modulation scheme: 8-VSB. In a
joint filing with NBC to the FCC, the network warns that the
8-VSB system provides poor indoor reception - something that
many broadcast engineers have known all along. Zenith, holder
of the 8-VSB patent, now admits that a decoder chip solution
may be two years away. The ATSC organization, the DTV
standards-setting body supporting 8-VSB, finds itself in
a very difficult position.

CARRYING VOICE OVER A 'RED POINTER' LASER BEAM

Ham radio operators have invented a simple way to beam
voice signals through space using inexpensive over-the-counter
'red pointer' laser beams. Here's how they did it, using
cheap stuff, a proud tradition in the amateur community:

that look all one color in the thumbnails. Explanations are
included. The story was written by Bob Gonsett of CGC and

REC RADIO IMPROVES ITS FREE LPFM CHANNEL ANALYSIS SOFTWARE

The REC LPFM Tool has been upgraded and updated. Database
listings are effective 6/23/2000 and include LPFM applications.

Significant changes in this release of the LPFM Tool include:

  - Conversion to the FCC CDBS system.
  - Improved search speed.
  - Inclusion of LPFM stations in the channel report.
  - State by State listing of LPFM stations. Clicking on a
station will generate a customized channel report that will
detect potential interference, mutually exclusive LPFM
    applications and defects.

THANKS FOR THE ENG ACCIDENT COVERAGE

Thanks for the good job you did on the ENG accident. Gary
Stigall of SBE did a very fine piece also. Let's hope we can
learn from this, hoping there will never be another example to
remind us.

  WORMS ON MARS

  Doug Myrland of KPBS writes:

"The links below might be of interest to CGC Communicator
readers. (This is from) a listserv my wife belongs to--since I'm
always sending her links from the Communicator, she thought these
were sufficiently unusual. Be sure to scroll down to the bottom
of the photo."

(The photo comes from a company called Malin Space Science
Systems which reportedly operates the Mars Orbital Camera
("moc"). The curious objects are at the very bottom of the
photo and look like worms but are said to be the size of
subways. They may simply be lava flow with periodic cracking.
