  BEST UHF DTV ANTENNA

Pete Putman, writing in Tech-Notes #059, describes his home
testing of 15 different UHF receiving antennas, looking for best
DTV performance. He is located 25 miles from five Philadelphia
DTV stations (CH-25 to 67) and 65 miles from New York (with DTV
activity on CH-44 & 56). Pete notes as follows:

"The antenna that works flat-out best is a Channel Master
model 4221/3201, which is made of four-bay crossed UHF dipoles
with a turkey wire screen reflector. It's about 30" by 48" and
costs all of $20..... Test results are available.... drop me
an email." Pete also uses a Channel Master #7775 preamp. His
e-dress is: dtv@projectorexpert.com

THE KGB SKYSHOW - 25 YEARS OLD AND COUNTING

The original idea was to synchronize fireworks with music,
a concept invented by Radio Station KGB and copied by many others
throughout the world. Here is the inside engineering view,

  FCC FORFEITURE WATCH (SELECTED ITEMS)

Fine reduced from $17,000 to $4,000 for alleged repeated
operation inside and just outside the conventional 11-meter
CB radio band, and refusal to make radio installation available
for FCC inspection. Fine reduced because of limited ability
to pay:

  CGC FM WATCHDOGS DELAYED

CGC's FM Watchdog Service, monthly short-spacing studies
for subscribing stations, will be delayed slightly to work
around two new types of bugs uncovered in the FCC's CDBS database.
The good news is that LPFM coordinates are now in the database,
and will be included in this month's computer run.

SELF-OSCILLATING TV ANTENNA PREAMPS - TWO PROBLEMS

Jerry Plemmons, Systems Engineering Manager for Harris
Broadcast Systems, recounts some of his experience with self-
oscillating TV antenna preamps, and divides the problem into
two categories: The occasional random preamps that go into
self-oscillation, VHF or UHF, and the preamps that have so much
gain (or poor design) that they are likely to self-oscillate
when brand new. "It is the latter that pose a major health
problem for the electromagnetic spectrum."

ANCIENT TV RELAY STANDARD MOVES FORWARD

The TIA/EIA has proposed to reaffirm EIA Standard RS-250-B,
Electrical Performance Standards for Television Relay Facilities,
adopted September 1976 (what we call NTSC analog video microwave),
without changes or updates. The TIA/EIA claims the broadcast
industry has no interest in modifying or updating the standard.
There is no mention of DTV or digital anything in the version
they are considering.

The standards process is open to all interested parties. If
you are interested in participating, contact:

  VANDALS CLAIM TWO BROADCAST TOWERS

Two of four new towers owned by WNWI-AM (1080 kHz) in Oak Lawn,
IL were felled by vandals over the weekend. The site was under
construction as this is a "move in" station from Valporasio, IN.

I have no data on the possible culprits. This is the first
time in 27 years a tower was felled by vandals in or around
Chicago. The last one was WJJD-AM losing towers in 1973.
Same way.

  ABOUT THE CENTRAL TIME ZONE

I've been invited to tap the collective wisdom of CGC
subscribers. I'm not a tech professional, just someone doing
research for a column I write for a local newspaper. I answer
questions readers send to me.

At the moment, I'm having trouble finding a clear explanation
of why major TV nets still broadcast prime-time shows one hour
earlier in the Central time zone. I assume it was a necessity
in the very early days, when shows were done (mostly) live and
distribution was by coax. But there aren't those limitations
today. And how early was there a true coast-to-coast TV network
system? Thanks in advance for any info/referrals.
