FCC ADOPTS RULES FOR LABELING DTV RECEIVERS

The FCC has adopted rules for the labeling of digital
television (DTV) receivers to insure that consumers will be
fully informed about the capabilities of DTV sets to operate
with cable television systems. Find out about the new
designations "Digital Cable Ready 1," "Digital Cable Ready 2"
and "Digital Cable Ready 3" at:

  http://www.fcc.gov/Bureaus/OPP/News_Releases/2000/nrop0001.html

  TELEPHONE VIA THE INTERNET

Only about one percent of telephone traffic is currently
handled over the internet, but estimates are that in five years
the figure will be 15%.

  DETAILS ON THE AKOO.COM DEVICE

Amazing details on the Akoo.com device described by Mike
Worrall in CGC #408 are now posted on an FCC web site. As you
may recall, the distributor of this product claimed that it
could "wirelessly" send "internet audio and digital music from
your PC to any stereo or portable radio system of your choice
up to 1,000 ft. (away)." Transport is handled in the 900 MHz ISM
band; output is on either 88.1 or 88.3 MHz, switch selectable.

  See the FCC postings at:

Put O5U (not 05U) in the "first three characters" box
Put KS110 (not KSllO) in the "optional" box
  Hit the "Start Search" button.

Howard Fine provided the magic numbers.

  CAMP PENDLETON INTERFERENCE SQUELCHED

Thanks to Jim Lyon and Bill Zears of the San Diego FCC
Enforcement Bureau Office for resolving the military frequency-
hopping interference affecting XETV Fox Channel 6. After
locating one transmitter with direction finding techniques, the
FCC learned that there were about 40 more transmitters in the
field! No further interference to XETV has been reported, so
apparently the Pendleton crew shut them all down.

  MOON MICROWAVE BEACON COMING SOON

"SETI" is the search for extraterrestrial intelligence. The
SETI League Inc. has received a small grant to help it construct
a transmitter to bounce microwave signals off the moon's surface.

The project will enable amateur and professional radio
astronomers to calibrate their receiving systems by providing
a stable reference signal from a known point in the sky.
According to N6TX, the SETI League should be ready to start
bouncing signals off the moon by early 2001.

BE ON THE LOOKOUT FOR THE TALL WHITETOP WEED

The University of CA/San Diego has asked for help in
locating the invasive whitetop weed plant (transmitter engineers
take note). Good descriptions and photos are available at:

  http://pub4.ca.blm.gov/eaglelake/perpep.html
    and
  http://splash.metrokc.gov/wlr/lands/Weeds/peppweed.htm

Tall whitetop sightings should be reported to the Ag
Commissioner's Office, 5555 Overland Ave. Bldg. 3, SD, 92123.
A good contact is Bill Winans.
