SANTIAGO PEAK ISSUES HIT THE L.A. TIMES

There is a front page article about the Forest Service's push
to ban broadcasting on Santiago Peak in the Orange County section
of the LA Times for September 21, 2000. KWVE(FM), 107.9 MHz,
San Clemente, 530 watts ERP, now operates successfully from
that site after passing extensive interference tests stipulated
and overseen by the Forest Service (not merely "one day" worth
of testing as indicated by the Times' story). Why the Forest
Service continues to oppose broadcasting is a great mystery.

Of course, CGC Communicator readers know that the Forest
Service has also proposed to ban paging transmitters from Santiago
Peak, and possibly anything broadcasting or paging related. At
risk are broadcast auxiliary equipment and even wireless internet
transmitters. Here is the URL for the Times story which probably
will not be posted for free viewing much longer:

  MOTOROLA'S T-900 "COMMUNICATOR" - ONE HOT PRODUCT

  Imagine a self-contained WIRELESS internet e-mail terminal
the size of a pack of cigarettes. It's the Motorola T-900
"Personal Interactive Communicator." Think of it as a two-way
pager with LCD screen and miniature (but easy to use) QWERT
keyboard. Runs about three weeks on one 1.5V AA battery.
Cost is $100 after rebate.

This product is available from Skytel ((800) 759-8737)
directly, or through Staples, Office Depot or Comp USA.
Service is $15/month for five hundred 100-character messages.
(The T-900s are also offered by other point-of-sale suppliers
and service providers; however, Skytel is the only service
provider we have tested so far.)

TO FIND OUT MORE ABOUT MOTOROLA'S T-900 AND SKYTEL

Motorola's web site gives excellent details on the T-900:

  http://www.motorola.com/GSS/CSG/direct_pagers/T900/

You may find out about Skytel and their footprint maps
for "full service" (two-way) messaging at:

  http://www.skytel.com

Click on the "Coverage" button, then check the box that
says, "SkyWriter or eChat" and enter a city and state.

Send us a letter and share your T-900 experiences with CGC
Communicator readers. (CGC thanks Steve Cilurzo, an enthusiastic
T-900 user, for alerting us to this fascinating product.)

  PRESS WIRELESS PHOTOS

Once upon a time, news reporters used noisy teletype
machines, some linked together by high frequency (HF) radio
circuits. Revisit that era now by clicking on the last five
photos (black & whites) posted on the following web page:

http://albums.photopoint.com/j/AlbumIndex?u=33595&a=6659515

Test your eyes and the resolution of your computer screen
on the first new photo by examining the (White) King Soap
billboard and looking for an obvious misspelling.

Photo #4 is a real treat and takes us back to 1907.
How marvelous it must have been to be alive in that era
when electricity astounded everyone.

PC AUDIO-TO-FM RADIO - ANOTHER SOLUTION

For a one-box solution to convert PC audio into an RF
signal that FM radios can receive, see:

  http://www.netplayradio.com

The downside to this device is that it needs to be
located very close to an FM radio in order to meet Part 15 specs.
According to Howard Fine, the FCC has granted Part 15 approval.

  WEATHER RADIO RECALL

Oregon Scientific is recalling about 10,000 model WR-122
desktop weather radios. This radio can fail to decode certain
signals broadcast by the National Weather Service or can provide
incorrect warnings of severe weather that put lives and property
at risk.

  LARGEST SUNSPOT IN NINE YEARS

HF radio enthusiasts: Beware of the appearance of sunspot
#9169, the largest observed in nine years. The area of this spot
is 11 times the area of the earth's surface, and the spot is now
rotating toward the center of the sun's earth-facing hemisphere.
This will aim its effects directly toward us.

  A large sunspot such as this one can produce big solar flares;
so far, however, #9169 has been a remarkably quiet giant.
