  2500-2690 MHZ AS A POTENTIAL 3G BAND

The 2500-2690 MHz band is currently used by the Instructional
Television Fixed Service (ITFS), Multipoint Distribution Service
(MDS), and Multichannel Multipoint Distribution Service (MMDS).
The FCC has just issued an Interim Report looking into the
possibility of sharing this band with Third Generation ("3G")
Wireless Systems to provide mobile high-speed access to the
Internet and other broadband services.

COMMENTS WANTED ON TERION'S REQUEST FOR MORE HIGH FREQUENCY
  SHORT-DATA MESSAGING CAPACITY

In July 2000, the FCC granted Terion, Inc. (formerly Flash
Comm) authority to build and operate a nationwide, commercial,
two-way short-data messaging system on specific channels in the
HF band (3 to 30 MHz). Now, Terion wants more spectrum, more
"watt-seconds per day" and related items:

ENFORCEMENT: LAPD NABS POLICE RADIO PIRATE

Los Angeles police have arrested a man suspected of using
a stolen fire department radio to broadcast over a police
frequency. According to news reports, the unidentified man
used the radio to transmit terrorist threats, bomb threats
and profanity over the Los Angeles Police Department's
Wilshire Station frequency.

  GOOD GOING GREG!

Let me add my congratulation to Greg Ogonowski on his
promotion to Orban! Greg is brilliant, and more than deserves
this ticket out of the "radio station employee rat race"!

  CDBS QUESTION

Does anybody know why, in the FCC's new CDBS database,
in the FM_Eng_Data table, there is a field entitled, "power_
output_vis_kw"? I have yet to see an FM Broadcast transmitter
with a visual output power amplifier.....

  CLAYTON CAUGHILL PASSES AWAY

Those of you who may have known him will probably be as
affected by this news as I was. A mutual friend just called
from Hawaii with the news that Clayton Caughill passed away last
night (November 10). He had been having problems for some time,
and everything just caught up with him. I found him to be a very
knowledgeable and highly competent engineer, as well as a very
nice person. I'll miss him very much.

HAM RADIO - THE INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION IS ON THE AIR

The ham radio station on board the International Space
Station has been commissioned and the signal is terrific,
even with 5 watts and a temporary antenna. Listen on 145.80 MHz,
but remember that the station is in a low earth orbit, so it's
not visible often, and the crew can only operate in their spare
time.

IT'S ALIVE! HAM RADIO'S PHASE 3D SATELLITE IS IN ORBIT!

A new era in amateur radio communications was ushered in on
November 16, 2000 (UTC) with the successful launch of the Phase 3D
satellite now known as AMSAT-OSCAR 40, or simply "AO-40." This
high altitude bird is temporarily using a geostationary parking
orbit before rockets boost the satellite into a higher elliptical
orbit. The radio footprint should be spectacular.
