  SELF-OSCILLATING TV PREAMPS - UPDATE

A letter from Gary Hendrickson of the FCC indicates that
Winegard Company will not only replace any of their self-
oscillating TV preamplifiers that are found (CGC #400 & 401),
but that the company has also taken a pro-active stance to
search out defective units in the field. See:

  Click on 'Additional Postings'
Click on 'SELF-OSCILLATING TV PREAMPS - UPDATE'

Gary adds that Winegard has been extremely cooperative, and
that Winegard is "eager to help get all of the defective units
out of circulation. He continues by saying that, "We very much
appreciate their efforts to retrieve as many oscillating TV
antenna preamps as can be found."

  ROBERT SILLIMAN, DECEASED AT 87

One of America's best known Radio Consulting Engineers,
Robert M. Silliman, died Monday, February 12, at the age of
87. The broadcast industry has lost an eminent engineer, a
distinguished gentleman and a constant source of inspiration.
If you have followed the success of Electronics Research, Inc.,
you know of Bob Silliman's fine work.

  C-BAND INTERFERENCE REACHES ONTARIO, CA

The C-band satellite downlink interference reported in
CGC #432 even affected a receiver in Ontario, CA - this according
to a report by Ralph Ortiz, CE of KHSC-TV. Although the
interference has vanished, its source remains a mystery.

ISOLATED FM SITE NEEDED FOR RESEARCH PROJECT

I am planning some extensive RF field measurements to
evaluate measurement techniques. Does anyone know of a FM
radio station with the following characteristics:

High power, low antenna mounting height, isolated with
no other broadcast stations collocated, with some degree of
relatively flat ground around it, at least in one direction,
and that is accessible?

  Thanks, Ric Tell, rtell@radhaz.com

ABOUT THE FCC DATA SERVERS NAMED AFTER WATERFALLS

Re the interesting report from FCC's Sheryl Segal in CGC #433,
(Commission web servers named Svartifoss, Gullfoss, Haifoss,
Dettifoss, Hraunfoss, etc. from Icelandic waterfall names):

"Foss" does mean waterfall in the Scandinavian languages (not
Iceland alone) and svart means black. Svartifoss means "black
in waterfall," literally. Gull means gold, Hai means shark.
Det is "that" but, with a double tt has no meaning. Neither
does Hraun.

MOUSE FINDS THE ULTIMATE WARM SPOT

  EARTHQUAKE POSTING SITE

CGC #400 reported on how you can sign up for automated
e-mail reports on major earthquakes in our area. Now, when
a major quake strikes, members of the general public are invited
to write the USGS and post their 'perceived intensity' reports
to a public bulletin board.

See where the quakes are felt by visiting:
  http://pasadena.wr.usgs.gov/shake/ca/

Click, for example, on one of the recent Big Bear earthquakes
and receive a map of perceived intensity for surrounding areas.
Then click on 'statistics' where the publics' reports are sorted
by community.

AMATEUR RADIO: 136 KHZ ACROSS THE POND

Hams on both sides of the Atlantic have set a new one-way
distance record on 136 kHz using ultra-slow CW and a 2 Hz
bandwidth. Extremely slow dashes sent by M0BMU were identified
by W4DEX in North Carolina at a distance of more than 6,300 km.
This was the first time a European LF station had been received
in the US. The following night, W4DEX copied a complete
callsign from G3AQC. Using dot lengths of 60 seconds, the call
took an hour to send!

THREE HAMS PILOT THE GOODYEAR BLIMP

Three members of the Catalina Amateur Repeater Association
recently got to fly - really fly - the Goodyear blimp. Each took
the controls for about a half hour and, because the blimp moves
so slowly and flies so low, they could "look right into everybodys
back yards and see who's flipping hamburgers at the barbecue."
