  ICE STORM HITS MT. WILSON

While outsiders may think of southern California as having
the climate depicted in Baywatch and 90210, atop Mt. Wilson just
to the north of Los Angeles, winters are real. Several L.A.
stations reported damaged antennas from an unusually severe storm
in mid-February - and more snow is on its way as we go to press.

in the process of thawing out, all part of a mini-photo gallery

One C-band receiving dish was reported to have been demolished
by falling ice, and half of a Ku dish was destroyed. There are
probably many other damage reports yet to be received.

  C-BAND RADAR HITS: THEY'RE BACK

Another attack of radar-type interference to some southern
California C-band receiving dishes is under way as we go to
press.

Howard Fine sounded the alarm Thursday night in a telephone
call to CGC: Certain earth stations in the greater Los Angeles
area were being hit. Soon, San Diego chimed in with reports of
their own. The following message was received from a San Diego
CATV engineer Friday afternoon:

"(The source of our problem is reported to be) a portable
microwave transmitter located on FORTUNA mountain!! The local
FCC field office has been notified of this problem."

Whether the actual problem is coming from Fortuna - and
whether the same transmitter is also impacting L.A. - are unknown
at this time. Fortuna Mtn. (1,291' AMSL) is 10 miles NE of
downtown San Diego and adjacent to Cowles Mountain.

WIRELESS MEDICAL TELEMETRY SERVICE: FREQ. COORDINATOR APPOINTED

The FCC has designated the American Society for Health Care
Engineering of the American Hospital Association to serve as the
frequency coordinator for the Wireless Medical Telemetry Service.
The affected spectrum consists of 608-614 MHz, 1395-1400 MHz and
1429-1432 MHz. The 608-614 MHz spectrum is UHF-TV CH-37 which
is ordinarily reserved for Radio Astronomy use.

EARLIER EPISODE OF C-BAND INTERFERENCE WAS WIDESPREAD

I meant to write you earlier, but that same week (that
KHSC-TV, Cox Cable/San Diego and others were receiving C-band
interference), KMEX-TV was also receiving C-Band satellite
interference. We're still scratching our heads as to what it
was or where it was coming from. As a point of reference,
KMEX-TV's studios are located just north of LAX.

ALLEGATION OF INTERFERENCE FROM SELF-OSCILLATING TV PREAMP

Our company operates UHF LTR trunked sites in the Southeastern
region. We have and are currently experiencing heavy interference
with these RV amps and antennas. We found the problem @ Lazy's
Day's RV Park just North of Tampa, FL. We actually tracked the
interference to the RV causing the problem.....

Could you give me a contact name & number of who at the FCC &
Winegard I need to speak with. This is a serious problem; I have
security officers on our system who cannot talk half the time
because of this interference.....

ISOLATED FM SITE NEEDED FOR RESEARCH PROJECT

I am planning some extensive RF field measurements to
evaluate measurement techniques. Does anyone know of a FM
radio station with the following characteristics:

High power, low antenna mounting height, isolated with
no other broadcast stations collocated, with some degree of
relatively flat ground around it, at least in one direction,
and that is accessible?

  Thanks, Ric Tell, rtell@radhaz.com

(This letter was published last week but, because of the
flood of news, may have been overlooked. If you have any ideas
that might help Ric, please let him know. -Ed.)

HAM RADIO: NOW A TWO-WAY 136 KHZ CONTACT 'ACROSS THE POND'

Amateur Radio history was made this month when amateurs in
Canada and the UK completed what appears to be the first two-way
transatlantic Amateur Radio exchange on 136 kHz. VA3LK and G3AQC
managed the feat using extremely slow CW that featured 90-
second long dits and 180-second long dahs. It took nearly 70
minutes for one of the stations just to send his call sign, and
two weeks of effort to complete the two-way contact.

Reception of weak LF signals typically is done using spectro-
graphic software such as ARGO or Spectran. G3AQC estimated his
ERP at 350mW, while VA3LK said he might have been at the 5W ERP
level. Transmitting on LF is not yet authorized in the U.S.,
so a two-way contact with the States was out of the question.
