NEW AND IMPROVED FCC 'FM QUERY PAGE' NOW ON LINE

The Mass Media Bureau's FM Query page has been completely
rewritten, and the new version is most impressive. Visit the
feature-rich site at the following URL:

  http://www.fcc.gov/mmb/asd/fmq.html

Dale Bickel was responsible for the achievement. He writes,
"While the HAAT/contour calculation program has been on the
Internet for a while, it took me about three weeks to rewrite
the FM Query part, plus about another week for cleanup and to
link it to the HAAT program." If you like what you see, drop
Dale a note of thanks: dbickel@fcc.gov. Now if the FCC would
just revamp (or even reactivate) its TV Query site!

  C-BAND PROBLEMS AT KPSC(FM)

We are feeding KPSC (Palm Springs) with a C-band digital
satellite feed on Transponder 1 of Galaxy 11 (74.3 MHz IF). On
occasional weekdays, around the hour of 7 am, our receiver mutes
for 15-120 minutes. As far as I can tell, this is the only time
this happens! The dish location is in the Little San Bernardinos
10 miles due North of Indio. I figure someone has to be lighting
up a feed that's hitting my site. I don't know how the ComStream
NPR receivers would react to a heavy radar hit since they do a lot
of averaging in the AGC/AFC circuits.

I was wondering if any CGC Communicator readers had helpful
suggestions.

GERMAN POWERLINE COMMUNICATIONS - RFI FEARED

Germany's upper house of parliament has given the green light
to powerline communications. This may be bad news for short wave
reception and maybe AM reception too in light of this technical
report commissioned by the European DX Council:

  CLEAR COMMUNICATIONS REMINDER

The importance of clear communications is nicely illustrated
in the following photo:

  http://www.bext.com/cgc/hangarsuds.jpg

According to the story (which we were assured is absolutely
true), the "chief airplane washer" turned on his high pressure
suds machine, then raced home after receiving an urgent phone
call. On the way out he shouted, "Don, turn it off." Don
thought he heard, "Don't turn it off." The picture tells the
rest.

Thanks to Helen Jones for the photo, and the reminder for us
all to communicate clearly.
