  FCC WEB SITE MAKE-OVER

The FCC has launched the first phase of a major redesign of
its web site. The idea is to provide greater uniformity in the
pages, and to make it easier to find information fast (an
expanded and improved search function is being added in stages).
Sample the current accomplishments at:

  FCC Home Page: http://www.fcc.gov/
  Enforcement Bureau: http://www.fcc.gov/eb/
  Wireless Telecom Bureau: http://www.fcc.gov/wtb/

The web page layout has been remarkably and effectively
simplified. Gone from the Home Page, for example, is the
bandwidth-hogging picture of the FCC's office building. Other FCC
web pages will be modified in stages, and the work is expected to
be completed in a couple of months. Our thanks to FCC staff, and
to their sharp web consultant, for incorporating so many positive
changes.

IMPROVEMENTS TO THE FM & TV QUERY PAGES

The FCC's FM Query page now shows the international class
for border zone stations. Also, the FM and TV Query pages have
the Antenna Structure Registration Number, where available from
CDBS. FM & TV Queries reside at:

  http://www.fcc.gov/mmb/asd/fmq.html
    and

AUCTION OF LICENSES FOR 747-762 AND 777-792 MHZ BANDS
  POSTPONED

The auction of licenses in the 747-762 and 777-792 MHz

be delayed pending FCC resolution of petitions for reconsideration
and clarification.

NEXT GENERATION INTERNET ("NGI") ON THE MOVE

  The NGI initiative, a multi-agency Federal R&D program that's
developing advanced networking technology for our future global
Internet, is demonstrating capabilities that are already 100 to
1,000 times faster end-to-end than today's Internet. These speeds
will have important implications for radio and TV broadcasters
worldwide. Will dedicated, high power, single channel broadcast
transmitting operations become obsolete?

Tomorrow's Internet promises to open a wide digital pipeline
for virtually every form of communication. Take a look at the NGI
Web site at:

  http://www.ngi.gov/sc00/about-ngi.html

BILLBOARD AM RADIO (AND SIMILAR INSTALLATIONS)

The 200 to 300 foot range on a low power [Part 15] AM station
is not real. I have installed two of these for customers wanting
to do parking lot advisories. The device was approved under
Part 15 and installed in exact compliance. No coils or tricks,
but they did have a good ground plane that already existed.
These gave good coverage to at least 1/4 mile and could be heard
at 1/2 mile. They quickly faded after 1/2 mile.

RADIO NETHERLANDS OCCUPIES BBC'S SHORTWAVE FREQUENCIES

In response to Russ Jackson's statement regarding the BBC
and the "end of an era," I would like to state that I certainly
wouldn't discard my shortwave receiver. Although the BBC will
be missed, Radio Netherlands has hopped on the old BBC frequencies
and does a fine job covering world news along with interesting and
entertaining magazine programs. Hear them on 6165 and 9845 kHz
here in North America. For schedule information, see:

  MORE ON RADIO NETHERLANDS

Radio Netherlands is now broadcasting on the former BBC North
American frequencies (as of July 1). Some info is available at:

  http://www.beradio.com/2001/07_jul/news/radio_neth.htm

A press release issued July 11 states that Radio Netherlands
is already planning to expand their programming schedule.
