FCC EXAMINES MORE SPECTRUM FOR 3G

The FCC is examining additional frequency bands that could
be used to support the introduction of advanced wireless services,
including third generation (3G) and future generations of wireless
systems. They are now looking into spectrum currently designated
for the Mobile Satellite Service, the Unlicensed Personal
Communications Service, the Amateur Radio Service and the
Multipoint Distribution Service: 1910-1930, 1990-2025, 2150-2160
2165-2200 and 2390-2400 MHz.

FCC FORFEITURE WATCH - SELECTED ITEM

Forfeiture against Califormula, Inc., Chula Vista, reduced
from $10,000 to $6,000 for relocating a microwave system without
authority to do so. The fact that operation at the wrong
location "was not as egregious as that of a pirate operator"
bought a $2,000 reduction. Califormula's overall history of
compliance with the Communications Act and the Commission's Rules
brought another $2,000 reduction.

Bill Welty, Harvard operations began at 6:30 p.m. on Friday,
August 10, 2001.

  KPBS-TV PICTURES FROM SAN MIGUEL

The first link below will bring you still pictures of
KPBS-TV's DTV tower/antenna installation. The second link is
a live shot of their new tower. Doug Myrland writes, "We're
using this little live camera to monitor the tower lights (and
to just reassure ourselves that the thing is still standing!).
If you see something other than our new tower, it means Skot
Norton is streaming some other video for another KPBS project,
or encoding something for future use. Other than those rare
occasions, the tower cam is on all the time. You'll need to
install a Windows Media Player, but heck, that's free, and you
ought to have one of those on your computer anyway....."

  SPRAY ON ANTENNAS

The July issue of a military communications magazine called
the Signal tells how researchers are studying applications and
materials to create antennas that are sprayed onto a surface.
To create an antenna, a template is placed on the desired surface.
Then metal-based or carbon-graphite based paints are sprayed over
it. Peel away the template, install an RF connector and
-- voila -- an almost instant antenna precisely trimmed to the
desired operating frequency.
