  LED FLASHLIGHTS

While-colored light emitting diodes (LEDs) are being
incorporated into long-lasting flashlight products such as this
offering from Petzl - the "Zipka Headlamp" - that should be
useful for a variety of applications:

  TELEPHONE TRENDS

The FCC has released its bi-annual "Trends in Telephone
Service" report. Among the more interesting findings:

  * Local phone rates have remained steady during the last
decade. The average monthly local residential charge for
service was $20.78 in October 2000 as compared to $19.24
  in 1990.

  * As of November 2000, 100.2 million households had
  telephone service.

  * High-speed Internet lines (over 200 kbps in at least one
direction) for homes and businesses increased to 7.1 million
lines (or wireless channels) in service at the end of 2000,
from 4.4 million in June 2000.

SCFCC IS UPDATING ITS NEWSLETTER E-MAILING LIST

The Southern California Frequency Coordinating Committee
("SCFCC") is updating the e-mailing list for its newsletter.
The SCFCC is THE frequency coordinating body for southern
California broadcast auxiliary frequencies, and their newsletter
is only for those inside the broadcast industry.

If your station holds or plans to hold broadcast auxiliary
permits (including STL licenses), this newsletter is ESSENTIAL.
To subscribe, or for more information, drop a note to Howard
Fine and be sure to include your name, work title and station
call sign, and your phone and fax numbers. Subscriptions are
free.

RADIO ENGINEERING CHANGES AT KLSX & KLAX

I suppose it's old news by now, but yes... I am now
officially the Chief Engineer at KLSX-FM.

Dave Wolfe, who was my Assistant CE at KLAX-FM (later Assistant
CE at KTNQ/KLVE/KSCA, then CE at the K-Frog stations in the Inland
Empire), has returned to KLAX as their CE. I feel better about
having resigned as Chief at KLAX knowing that Dave, who helped me
build the showcase facilities at KLAX and is probably the finest
studio builder I've ever worked with, will now maintain that
facility to the extremely high standards under which it was
designed and built.

  INLAND EMPIRE?

A CGC Communicator reader writes: What's up with the
"Inland Empire, CA" designation as the location for a broadcast
station? In CGC #466, "Inland Empire" is listed as the city of
license for KHTV-LP.

I live and work in the Inland Empire but there is no
such city, it's just a place (some call it the valley areas
surrounding San Bernardino and Riverside). Does the FCC
consider 'Inland Empire' a valid location?

  ABOUT THE KNX(AM) WEB PAGE

This page about the new KNX transmitter is outstanding!
Thanks for putting it up, and congratulations on the performance
of the equipment. I salute KNX for keeping a dedicated staff of
engineers! And, thanks to Bob Gonsett for letting us all know
this page exists.

If I were still teaching broadcasting classes, seeing this
page would have been a mandatory assignment.

  Russ Jackson, Vacaville, CA
(Retired college instructor from San Diego and frequent
listener to the KNX drama hour, particularly Saturday night.)

BEWARE: TELEPHONE AREA CODE 809 IS COSTLY

If you get an e-mail, voicemail or page telling you to call a
phone number with an 809 area code, beware. Chances are, it's a
scam and your phone bill will be astronomical. The FCC has
issued a warning:

THE PROTOTYPE VOICES OF DONNA AND CRAIG

The task of feeding a machine raw text and having it
pronounce words in complete sentences has been a daunting.
Human-like inflections are obviously missing with "Perfect Paul,"
the automated voice of the National Weather Service.

Thanks to a tip by CGC Communicator reader Allen Sklar (W7AS
of Scottsdale, AZ), you may now hear samples of Perfect Paul's
speech, and the proposed replacement voices generated by computer
models Donna and Craig:

  RADIO PIONEER: DONALD HINGS

I am always trying to publicize radio pioneers that have not
been written about. Donald Hings is a Canadian wireless inventor
who came up with an early form of the walkie talkie and played a
big role in the Canadian and British war effort. Unrecognized
compared to people like Al Gross, Hings was recently presented
with the Order of Canada by her Excellency, the Right Honourable
Adrienne Clarkson, the Governor General of British Columbia.
His granddaughter has built a nice web site to honor his radio
accomplishments:
