  INTERNET TIME SYNCHRONIZER

There are many internet time synchronizers available these
days. Most of them do the same things. At my request, Greyware
Automation has added a new and unique feature to their Domain
Time II software. The package, with server and client, allows a
network to be synchronized to NIST with some pre-determined
offset. The offset can be positive or negative and is adjustable
in milliseconds. With this feature, I can now compensate for
network delays caused by satellite paths and MPEG CODECs. For
more information, contact Greyware at:

ORIGIN OF THE TERM 'INLAND EMPIRE'

At the turn of the century there were great land-development
battles between San Francisco and it's smaller, poorer sister,
L.A. To hype the L.A. area to people moving west, publicity began
referring to the L.A. area as "the Southland." The San
Bernardino/Riverside area also began to boom in the early century,
and to distinguish themselves from L.A., one newspaper began
referring to the area east of the San Gabriel Valley as "the
Inland Empire." The name appeared on the paper's masthead around
1914 and originally referred only to their circulation area
(Upland/Chino to Banning). Land-development boosters have used
the term ever since.

San Bernardino Public Library.)

RE "LOCAL PHONE RATES HAVE REMAINED STEADY" (CGC #467)

Of course this doesn't include FCC charges, local access
charges, municipal charges and all those other things that
almost double my monthly residential line charges.

  PSA BROADCASTING INFO NEEDED

  A CGC associate writes:

I am preparing a short article on some beautiful music
stations. Can you remember back to the '70s when Pacific
Southwest Airlines purchased some FM stations in California?
I think they were KPSA, Los Angeles; KPSE, San Diego; KPS(?),
San Jose; and perhaps stations in Sacramento and Fresno.
Tom Polino was the corporate chief at the time. I just need
the call letters and the cities.

  A MOST USEFUL WEB SITE

An outstanding web page for amateur (and commercial) radio
operators is:

  http://www.ac6v.com/

Find out where to buy batteries, scanners and brand new
small-sized vacuum tubes; learn about the Family Radio Service
(FRS), specialized antennas, S-units and more.

The page is maintained by Rod Dinkins, AC6V, an avid ham
radio operator and DXer, and a professional technical writer.
The site consists of web links galore, all neatly indexed, and
the URLs are regularly checked for currency.

  PHOTOGRAPHING TOWERS

Fred Vobbe provides some interesting tips on photographing
towers from airplanes - and provides samples of his work - at:

  http://www.nrcdxas.org/articles/FlytimeAug2001/

One of his more interesting tips: Bright sunshine isn't
best; a slightly overcast day is preferable. When the sun is
out, towers tend to blend with the landscape.
