NEW MOBILE ALLOCATION AT 2500-2690 MHZ

The FCC has added a mobile allocation to the 2500-2690 MHz
band to provide additional near-term and long-term flexibility
for the use of this spectrum (e.g. use by 3G services). However,
because the band is already extensively used by ITFS and MMDS
folks, and in order to preserve the viability of these services,
the FCC is not relocating the existing licensees or otherwise
modifying their permits.

DIAL 711, STARTING OCTOBER 1, FOR "TRS"

October 1 is the day that the familiar calling shortcuts of
911 and 411 will be joined by 711 - the new three digit number
for access to all Telecommunications Relay Services ("TRS").
TRS is commonly used to communicate with people who are deaf,
or have severe speech impediments. The assistance of a special
operator is involved. The service is free of charge to the user.

  PICNIC NOTES NEEDED

No one from CGC will be attending Wednesday's Mt. Wilson
SCFCC Picnic due to continuing obligations in relation to the
World Trade Center catastrophe. If news items worthy of
publication come up, please drop us a SHORT note with the
pertinent facts, and we'll include them in the next CGC
Communicator.

C-BAND SATELLITE INTERFERENCE HITS THE EAST COAST

A rash of radar interference to C-band TVRO receivers near
New York has been traced to military AWACS airplanes guarding the
East Coast, according to one consultant. He reports that the
problem is solved by the installation of a Microwave Filter
Company 7892D filter on the LNB. CGC Communicator #464 tells you
where to buy this filter at a discount - and the filter may also
solve a number of other interference problems (e.g. those caused
by radar altimeters).

(Thanks to Jerry Plemmons for forwarding the East Coast
report. A confirming report was received from John Winton
@ Fox Sports. The AWACS issue could impact the West Coast
  at any time. - Ed.)

  TV1 EXPLAINED

Re the question from John Schofield in CGC #476 ("...Need
explanation of "TV1"..."):

TV1 service is provided by most telephone companies. It is
still in wide use by most broadcasters and consists of a high
quality NTSC (analog) video loop with two 15 kHz audio channels.
Some know TV1 by its more generic name - "VandA" (Video and
Audio). It dates back to the days of AT&T Long Lines.....

  FCC's STEVE LINN PASSES AWAY

I am sad to report that Steve Linn and his wife were killed
in an automobile accident earlier today. They were heading for
Virginia Beach to attend an ARRL convention. The accident
occurred in Maryland....

Steve was a tremendous individual who had worked closely with
many SBE members in his role with the FCC. SBE and broadcasters
in general have lost a great friend....

  WIRELESS LANs

I ran across the following link on the YAHOO WirelessLAN
group discussion list. Thought you or the readers might enjoy
this concept. As many of us broadcast engineers are HAMs, here
is a new project to consider: using WLAN (wirelesslan) cards and
WLAN access points for HAM data links. Of interest is how to
comply with the HAM 10-minute ID rules. Also, the site's author
suggests that using these cards under Part 97 (HAM Rules)
supersedes the normal use of this equipment under Part 15 and
offers operational protection.
