IMPLEMENTATION OF VIDEO DESCRIPTION OF VIDEO PROGRAMMING

"With this Order, we clarify that the Commission's
emergency information rules [which] require that broadcasters
or multichannel video programming distributors (MVPDs) accompany
each "crawl" or "scroll" of emergency information with an aural
tone. We grant a limited waiver of this aural tone requirement
to MVPDs that receive emergency information warnings from The
Weather Channel (TWC) via Weather Star III and Weather Star Jr.
computers...."

  RADIO TOWERS FOR SALE

American Tower Corp. ("ATC") is selling some of its mountain-
top and high rise repeater towers at Sierra Peak, Baldwin Hills,
El Cajon, Julian, Topanga Ridge and Warner Springs, to mention
just a few California locations. Tom Swierczewski, Zoning
Representative for ATC, says that the company has several hundred
communications towers for sale throughout the U.S. Just ask him
for an e-mail list: <thomas.swierczewski@americantower.com>.

NORTHERN LIGHTS FILMED IN SAN DIEGO COUNTY

A "solar coronal mass ejection" (CME) swept past Earth in
late October 2001, and the fabulous Northern Lights were captured
on film as far south as Mt. Laguna in San Diego County. See for
yourself at:

  http://www.spaceweather.com/aurora/gallery_28oct01.html

Click on each thumbnail photo for a closer look. Note that
Dennis Mammana has posted three photos from Mt. Laguna: "#1" is
a duplicate of the thumbnail photo, but "#2" and "#3" are
unique.

COMPUTER FAILURE @ THE CALTECH/USGS EARTHQUAKE MESSAGING SITE

The 5.1 magnitude earthquake near Anza on October 30, 2001
should have generated an almost-immediate e-mail message to all
southern California Seismic Network (TriNet) e-mail subscribers.
However, this particular message was delayed about seven hours
due to a catastrophic network hardware failure that occurred
minutes before the shaker. Perhaps a new method of quake
prediction has been born!

service, see:

  TELCO LINE FREQUENCY EXTENDER NEEDED

I'm looking for a used single line frequency extender. Since
most stations have moved up to newer technology, I thought someone
locally might have one they want to get rid of, for cash. I'm
interested in any of the following:

    Comrex LX-T
    Comrex LXT/R
    Gentner EFT 900A
    Gentner EFT 1000A

MORE ON XM'S SATELLITE RADIO REPEATER ON MT. HARVARD

XM's transmitter consists of two 1KW amplifiers and uses
COFDM modulation. The idea is for the terrestrial repeater (on
Harvard) to overpower the direct satellite signals from the "Rock"
and "Roll" birds, swamping out receiver front ends with the
stronger local signal. Their Til-Tek antenna (about 16db of gain,
see <http://www.tiltek.com/>) is located at the end of nearly a
1000' run of 6" elliptical waveguide.

  FOUR DS3 (AND RELATED) QUESTIONS

  1) How many broadcast quality channels can be simultaneously
carried on a DS3 (45Mg) Private Line using MPEG2 encoding? 2) Is
DS3 bandwidth adequate for transmitting non-compressed broadcast
quality TV? 3) Will a Sony MPEG Encoder model E1000 encode in
MPEG2? 4) What additional equipment is needed between a Cisco
7120 router connected to a DS3 and the Sony encoder to facilitate
transmission of a broadcast signal?

  EAS TO REMAIN IN PLACE

Despite the fact that the EAS system was not activated on
September 11, it will remain in place but be subject to a "little
bit of a modest review" according to FCC Chairman Powell.

CIRCLES WITHIN A CIRCLE - AMAZING DISCOVERIES

One of the most curious pure mathematical discoveries for
2001 was announced in the easy-to-read article identified below.
Curiosity-driven research has led to some remarkable geometric
findings involving integer relationships between tangent circles
and spheres. As one researcher put it, "Where do these numbers
come from? What's going on here?"
