KTLA, CH-5, LOS ANGELES, CELEBRATES ANOTHER GREAT ANNIVERSARY
In September 1942, W6XYZ, an experimental television station,
began broadcasting from Paramount Studios in Los Angeles. It was
the vision of Klaus Landsberg (then 22, and only recently having
escaped from Nazi Germany) who made it successful. In October of
1942, W6XYZ made the first telecast inside a motion picture studio
(Paramount) "This Gun for Hire." By 1946, the station had become
KTLA and brought L.A. the first telecasts of wrestling, boxing and
most other sports. Later came the invention of the telecopter....
first live telecast of an atomic bomb test (it was fed to all
three networks via a 140 mile microwave link - the longest
attempted at that time).... and the list of accomplishments goes
on and on:

MORE ON THE SUNSET RIDGE WILLIAMS FIRE
This is to confirm that the Williams fire reported last week
(CGC #544) did in fact impact Sunset Ridge, formerly the main
transmitter site for KSCI(TV), and now the aux site for that
station.
KSCI's metal building is nearly a total loss inside due to
the fire. Virtually all transmission equipment was destroyed
including the Acrodyne transmitter, some microwave and satellite
gear, a Moseley remote control, and all electrical service
equipment. Only our power generator and two satellite dishes
survived.
The loss of electrical power inside the building took out
the tower lights, and we are scrambling to restore power as our
tower is the only one which requires lights. Of course, the
FAA was notified.

TWO SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA LPFM CPs LAPSE
Eighteen months have passed since the first CPs were granted
to So. Cal LPFMs. Several LPFM stations are still not on the air.
This includes the Calvary Chapel station in North Edwards and an
astronomy club in San Clemente. Another Calvary Chapel station
in El Centro, still off the air, will have their CP lapse in
November. In southern Cal., one LPFM, KWBB-LP for Calvary
Chapel in Big Bear Lake, has covered their CP. Pepperdine's
KWVS-LP in Malibu is almost there and a new applicant for 105.5
east of El Cerrito is on the latest cut-off sheet.

  FOLLOW THE MONEY
[One might ask] why adjacent channel noise is considered
acceptable interference for IBOC, yet the FCC/Congress had an
absolute heart attack that adjacent channels would be harmed
by LPFM stations.

  FLUKE DIGITAL MULTIMETER RECALL
In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission,
Fluke Corp. is recalling about 40,000 digital multimeters, 17,200
of which were sold in the U.S. The recalled units take longer
than normal, up to 18 seconds, to display readings of AC voltages
above 500 volts. Users can misinterpret the delayed reading to
mean that high voltage is not present. Some meters with model
numbers 175, 177 and 179 are affected. See the following website
for specific information:

AMATEUR RADIO GLOSSARY & ABBREVIATIONS AVAILABLE ON THE WEB
Now on the ARRL web site: an Amateur Radio glossary and an
abbreviations list:
  http://www.arrl.org/qst/glossary.html
  http://www.arrl.org/qst/aguide/Abbrev_AWE.pdf
The glossary covers the range of terms from "Alternating
current (ac)" to "Yagi antenna" and "73." The abbreviations
cover the field from "a" - the abbreviation for "atto," the
prefix for 10 to the minus 18th - to "Z" for impedance and
Coordinated Universal Time.
Note that the abbreviation for kilohertz (kHz) starts with
a lower case "k" while the abbreviation for megahertz (MHz)
starts with an upper case "M." This is consistent with the
IEEE's definitions.
