PHOTOS: FIRESTORM DEVASTATES THE FM TRANSMITTER SITE
FOR KCAL-KFRG-KSGN (SAN BERNARDINO AREA OF CALIFORNIA)
All building roofs destroyed (wood trusses). All
transmitters annihilated. Anything aluminum instantly
cremated.
These are some of the most graphic images that CGC has
published to date. Special thanks to Bruce Potterton (KSGN)
and Jason Houts for capturing these remarkable photos.
Designing buildings to withstand firestorms should once
again be first and foremost in everyone's thoughts, along
with a renewed effort at brush clearing (100' minimum).

PROGRESS ON RESUMING OPERATIONS AT KCAL-KFRG-KSGN
KCAL and KFRG now have temporary low power operations on
the air from Box Spring Mountain, while KSGN has installed new
coax to its still-standing antenna and plans to resume near
full power operations from their burnt out site soon. In fact,
KSGN conducted on-air tests at about 70% power Monday night by
relying on the station's emergency power generator that
miraculously survived the firestorm. Thanks to Bruce Potterton,
Jess Drake, Chris Hicks, Jim Mussell and the staff at CGC for
lending their various skills to make the test possible.
Preliminary reports have raised some questions as to the
structural integrities of the KCAL and KFRG towers; hopefully
those structures will turn out to be okay.

limits applicable to facilities, operations, or transmitters."

SAN DIEGO'S 96.9 MHZ PIRATE TO LEAVE THE AIR OCTOBER 31
The reported cause of the planned silence of San Diego's
pirate station is the loss of its transmitter site, as elaborated
at the following web site. However, the pirate may be back
sooner than you think. See:

THE FCC VISITS AN ALLEGED PIRATE IN SAN FRANCISCO
Pirate radio stories don't often get into "mainstream"
newspapers, but this one appeared in the San Francisco Chronicle
on October 21st.... just one day after the FCC confiscated an
alleged pirate station's equipment.

TWO NBC CHIMES COMMENTS (CGC #596, 597)
In the early 1980s, while on a tour of WJR-AM in Detroit,
I was proudly shown what were described as "the ORIGINAL NBC
chimes" that were still bolted into the back of an equipment
rack in the station's terminal room.

AND IN CASE YOU MISSED IT ELSEWHERE....
According to an "ABC World News This Morning" broadcast
on July 8, 1988, the G, E, and C notes of the NBC chimes stood
for the General Electric Corporation.

  WHAT DID MARCONI REALLY HEAR?
Was Guglielmo Marconi the first person to receive trans-
Atlantic radio signals, or did he mistake background noise clicks
for the Morse Code letter "S" sent from Poldhu, England in 1901?
Consider the material presented in this provocative article from
Don Kimberlin and let us know your thoughts.

AUTHORITIES WANT QUESTIONS ANSWERED IN TOWER TERRORISM
Law enforcement authorities in northern California and
southern Oregon are searching for a suspect or suspects seen
tampering with electrical power towers. Last week's incident
was in California, just south of Redding, and involved a heavyset
man who used large wrenches to completely unbolt one leg of a four
legged 115 kV transmission tower. He had half the bolts removed
from a second leg when he was spotted and fled. A chase ensued,
but the suspect escaped and is still at large. This URL has
details:

BUILDING K06NC (LPTV CHANNEL 6) IN HAWAII
Despite the bad fire news in southern California (Julian and
Palomar Mountain are being evacuated as we go to press), it is
important to realize that life goes on elsewhere, and sometimes
broadcast engineering work takes us to beautiful and wonderful
places.
Relive the construction of K06NC, Hanamaulu, Hawaii, through
the camera lens of Don Mussell <mailto:dmsml@well.com> who
completed this transmitter installation in just seven weeks and
countless helicopter trips.
