FCC TOWER WATCH - SELECTED ITEM I
The licensee of KASO(AM), Minden, Louisiana, has been fined
$13,600 for failure to maintain an effective locked fence around
its antenna tower (broken hasp and a fence hole "large enough for
a small person to easily step through"), and failure to maintain
all required material in its public inspection file. The fine
was originally $17,000, but was reduced to $13,600 because of
the licensee's history of overall rule compliance.

FCC TOWER WATCH - SELECTED ITEM II
A Missouri tower operator has been fined $10,000 for a
partially failed tower lighting system. The failure was not
detected by the company hired to remotely monitor the lights,
and therefore the FAA was not advised of the problem -
exacerbating the danger of the situation.

THE CGC COMMUNICATOR TAKES A BREAK
The next CGC Communicator will be published later this
month or in early July - no set schedule as yet. This will give
us an opportunity to devote full attention to a major project,
and will give the SBE a quiet period to finish preparing to take
over our Letters to the Editor, Job Shoppe and picture posting
duties as of July 1, or thereabouts, by creating a separate
publication to handle just those items (see CGC #622).
Our current Letters Editor, Steve Blodgett, has done an
outstanding job in these departments, and we are much indebted
to him for the countless hours he has devoted to the task. If
you have a letter that you'd like to have published in the next
Communicator, or if you'd just like to thank Steve for a job well
done, please send mailto:steve@earthsignals.com.

ANTICIPATED NEW AM & FM ACTIVITY IN TIJUANA
A reliable Mexican source indicates that the new 920 kHz
station near Tijuana (XESDD) is coming closer to signing on the
air. The 780/920 kHz diplexer has arrived and is said to be
ready to go. Unexplained "other issues" constitute the only
hesitation in pushing the "Plate On" button.
In other news, a new Class B FM on 105.7 MHz is reportedly
getting ready to sign on soon. The transmitter site is the
XEKTT-AM site near Tijuana. An official authorization from the
SCT (Mexico's fCC) is said to be in hand.

GARY STIGALL -- NEW CE AT SAN DIEGO'S FOX 6
After 13.5 years at KFMB, I'm moving on up to the east side.
XETV/Fox6 has selected me as their next Chief Engineer. Starts
in July. My thanks to KFMB for a great stay -- it's been a fun,
fantastic, educational ride....

MORE HISTORY ON KGFJ 1230 KHZ (CGC #635)
Emails in response to last week's KGFJ posting - that the
old KGFJ (now KYPA) transmitter site has been shut off - have been
put on the web for your viewing pleasure. See them at:

AN RFI FIX FROM PERFECT FIT MAY BE AROUND THE CORNER (CGC #635)
We have a king-size electric blanket made by Perfect Fit. The
blanket has separate controls for each side of the bed, and two
separate power supplies, one for each side. Guess what? They both
create RFI, but not the same RFI. One causes more problems to the
AM broadcast band and the other to Channel 3.
I called Perfect Fit, left my name and problem on their
answering device, and received a call back from them, informing
me that they were aware of the problem and that there was a
filtered power supply in development that should be available by
the end of June or early July. When it is available, they will
call me back to set up shipping.

GOOD NEWS AS OF JUNE 1 REGARDING JACK RABELL (CGC #635)
Jack is now at Continental Rehabilitation Hospital. He was
moved there Friday and has been off the ventilator since then.
He still has pneumonia and a staph infection from an IV but is
recovering. This place is boot camp! He has an hour each of
physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy. Speech
is to get him back to swallowing normally and being able to
protect his airway. His trach is still in but may be out by the
end of the week. Yesterday he got into a wheelchair and got a
tour of the facility and visited with us in the dining room for
an hour. He's lost a month out of his life but his mind is coming
back with only a little bit of confusion. I have to take him
clothes today so he can be up and dressed during the day. Keep
those prayers coming--they've been the difference between living
and dying!
  Shiela Rabell, mailto:ottersrest@cox.net

A NOTE TO MY EMAIL CONTACTS
My current email address, steve@earthsignals.com, is being
spammed into the grave. So, sometime in July, I will turn it off.
My new address is currently active, and is similar to the old one.
Just change "steve" to "sblodgett."
  Thanks, all.

COLOR TV IS CELEBRATING ITS 50TH ANNIVERSARY THIS YEAR
Although color TV transmissions were in the development stages
earlier, the industry is celebrating its half-century mark this
year because it was 50 years ago that color broadcasts initially
became available to the public. NPR has posted a story and some
interesting historical resources at:

LOYD SIGMON, INVENTOR OF THE SIGALERT, DIES AT 95
Traffic alert inventor Loyd C. "Sig" Sigmon has died at the
age of 95. "SigAlerts" that warn southern California motorists
of traffic jams are named in his honor because it was Sig's
automatic recording device that made those alerts possible.

KPH "NIGHT OF NIGHTS" (TEXT COURTESY OF ARRL)
Ship-to-shore Morse code station KPH will once again be on
the air for the annual "Night of Nights" event.
Each year, KPH symbolically picks up the thread of commercial
Morse code on the date the service was ended in the US, July 12,
1999. This year at 5 years and 1 minute after the last message
was sent, KPH will return to the air on many of its original
commercial frequencies to send commemorative broadcasts, press
and weather. And of course they will listen for calls from any
Morse equipped ships that hear their transmissions.
Several original KPH ops will be at the key. The HF
operating frequencies are yet to be selected, but the MF
frequencies will be 500kc and 426kc. Operations will begin at
0001 GMT July 13, 2004. KPH invites signal reports from short-
wave listeners. For more info and to take a tour of KPH:

CELL PHONE "WAITING LOT" IN OPERATION AT LINDBERGH FIELD
Following the lead of several other busy airports around
the nation, officials at San Diego's Lindbergh Field have opened
a convenient "cell phone waiting lot" where drivers can park for
up to an hour while awaiting phone calls from arriving passengers.
It's hoped the new lot, equipped with portable toilets, will cut
down on the congestion caused by vehicles circling the airport
loop, waiting to pick up passengers.
