POWELL - VoIP IS A DEFINING ISSUE, A KILLER APPLICATION
The Chairman of the FCC is taking very seriously what
he sees as his agency's responsibility to focus on emerging
technologies, particularly the implications of Internet telephony.
Interviewed in Aspen, Colorado recently, Michael Powell was
quoted as saying VoIP will be driven by "a resonance, a
tangibility and a speed," making it a killer application for
legal policy change.

CANADIAN GROUPS CHARGE THAT HD RADIO WILL HARM RECEPTION
"Canada charges that HD Radio will harm reception of
Canadian stations inside its own border" - so reads the story
headline from the August 30, 2004 edition of Inside Radio.
According to the story, both the CBC and the Canadian
Association of Broadcasters have asked the country's technical
regulatory agency to protest iBiquity's In-Band On-Channel system
because of its alleged harmful effects on AM reception,
especially at night.

CALTRANS PROMOTES 1700 KHZ, XEKTT SMILES
At one time, Caltrans operated a Travelers Information Station
on 1700 kHz in the San Diego area to provide motorists with U.S./
Mexican border information. Now that Jaime Bonilla is using
1700 kHz for his Tijuana/Tecate station XEKTT, the Caltrans
signs along the I-5 and I-805 freeways - advising motorists to
tune to 1700 kHz - are a great promotional tool for Mr. Bonilla's
private enterprise.
According to one report, the signs are located on the
southbound I-805 from Otay Lakes Road to San Ysidro Blvd. On the
I-5 southbound, the signs start at around Palm Avenue. There are
believed to be one to two signs per highway - a fine example of
California taxpayers' dollars at work.

  POST 'EM AT BENX
Don't forget. Letters to the Editor of the CGC Communicator
are not being accepted at this time, but are always welcome at
the Benx website <http://benx.us>.
Recent postings include Cris Alexander's in-depth discussion
on radio STL alternatives based on practical experience. (Path:
Broadcast Engineers, Radio, Radio RF.) Also, Dick Warren needs
help with Audio-Metrics CD-10 players. He has "6 of these bad
boys and can't find a source for parts." (Path: Broadcast
Engineers, Radio, General Troubleshooting.) Perhaps you can
lend a hand.

RADIO ENGINEER ELECTROCUTED WHILE WORKING ALONE AT TOWER SITE
A Wyoming-based radio engineer was found dead at a Colorado
transmitter site recently, apparently electrocuted the previous
day while installing equipment. Robin Thomas, 39, described as
an experienced engineer who contracted out his services, was
working alone at the time of the accident.
  http://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/3677224/detail.html
Another source indicates that Thomas was a partner in Radio
Frontier Broadcasting and Blue Moose Broadcasting. He is said
to be the brother-in-law of Vic Michael, who has owned several
radio stations in Cheyenne.

and an earlier suspected arson involved an antenna belonging
to the Washington State Patrol.

  POISON CONTROL CENTER LINE
There is now a national poison control center telephone
number that is automatically routed to your state's own poison
control center:
  (800) 222-1222.
The number is in operation 24/7 (at least in California) and
would be good to post at your various facilities.
