MEDIA BUREAU CHIEF KENNETH FERREE ANNOUNCES HIS RESIGNATION
"It has been a privilege and pleasure to work with the staff
of the Media Bureau and FCC for the last four years, but it is
time for a new team to take over the helm of the agency," Ferree
said. His resignation becomes effective in early March 2005.
The Media Bureau was created in March 2002 when the Cable
Services Bureau was combined with the Mass Media Bureau, and
Ferree became Chief of the consolidated entity. Ferree provides
legal, policy and regulatory advice to the FCC Chairman and the
other FCC Commissioners on broadcast, cable, broadband, and
post-licensing satellite issues.

FCC ANNOUNCES LOW POWER FM FORUM ON FEBRUARY 8
The FCC will host a Low Power FM Forum focusing on the
experiences of low power FM licensees getting on the air, staying
on the air, and meeting local needs, and on issues affecting the
future of low power FM. The event will be webcast. See:

TWO REPLACEMENT SATELLITES AUTHORIZED FOR XM RADIO
The FCC has authorized XM Radio to launch and operate two
replacement satellites, XM-3 (Call Sign S2616 at the 85º W.L.)
and XM-4 (Call Sign S2617 at the 115º W.L.).
First, XM proposes to replace its east coast satellite with a
new satellite. Then the old east coast satellite will be moved to
the west coast where it will transmit at half capacity, while the
old west coast satellite will transmit at half capacity, reducing
the output power requirements for both birds. Then a new west
coast satellite will be launched, and the two "old" west coast
satellites will go dark and remain in orbit as emergency spares.
The premature degradation of XM's solar panels has led to the
satellite replacements. If all goes as planned, XM will complete
this tricky replacement program by 2007.

WILL THE KFI(AM) AND KSON(AM) TOWERS BE REPLACED?
Absent official word from KFI, the colorful street talk
is that the stack of paperwork needed to pave the way for a
replacement KFI tower structure could exceed the height of
the fallen tower.
While KSON has also been mum on their plans (if any) to
replace their partially collapsed tower structure, John Buffaloe
(who had accepted a position with Clear Channel before the KSON
tower was damaged) stated the following:
"My best guess, and my recommendation to them when I left,
was to use the remaining 200 feet of structure if it was found
to be sound. Building any kind of tower in San Diego is a likely
red tape nightmare, and may not be worth the effort."

DITCHING DESKTOP PHONES IN FAVOR OF WIRELESS CONNECTIVITY
By year's end, the 8,000 engineers and other employees who
work for Ford Motor Company in Dearborn, Michigan will have some
extra room on their desks. The company has signed a contract with
Sprint to remove all desktop phones and outfit these workers with
wireless phones equipped with the walkie-talkie functions in order
to provide them with greater mobility without sacrificing
availability.

HISTORIC SPACE ANTENNA MAY BE MOVED TO BARSTOW
It measures 90-feet across, hasn't been used in more than
20 years, and is currently hidden from public view behind the
locked gates of Fort Irwin. But if Barstow backers have their
way, the Pioneer Antenna - that supported America's first
satellite foray into space - could become a popular tourist
attraction along busy Interstate 15.
