REGARDING THE ONE DAY DELAY FOR THE SCFCC MT. WILSON PICNIC
Forest Service District Ranger Michael J. McIntyre explains
to CGC Communicator readers his perspective on the one day delay
that impacted the Mt. Wilson SCFCC meeting/luncheon for broadcast
engineers (see URL below).
Despite the delay, the event was well attended and the SCFCC
(and Howard Fine in particular) drew ample praise for being able
to hold the event at all considering the wildfires and forest
closures in the region. It isn't easy organizing these events.
Thanks Howard -- thanks SCFCC. You did a great job under
difficult and unexpected circumstances. - Ed.

RE "TUBES ARE COOL AGAIN. NANO-TUBES, THAT IS" (CGC #815)
Communicator readers may be interested to know that Alex Zettl,
leader of the team of nano-tube developers, is the son of Herbert
Zettl, the broadcast educator whose Television Production Handbook
has been the bible for a couple of generations of TV folks.

  DANE ERICKSEN INJURED
Dane Ericksen, a senior staff engineer at Hammett and Edison
Consulting Engineers and very active in SBE affairs, both on
the national level and as long-time Chapter Chair of the SF
Chapter, was injured two weeks ago when his motorcycle fell
on his leg as he was departing the restaurant where the monthly
SBE meeting was being held. He has been hospitalized with one
surgery so far, and another one will be necessary in the near
future. His spirits are good, and his daughters are with him.
Dane started his professional career working at the FCC SF
office in 1970 and succeeded me as the FM-TV-Cable Specialist
when I moved up to a supervisory position in 1974. After 10
years at the FCC, he joined the staff at H&E. He has been a
recreational motorcyclist for all the time that I have known
him. I hate to be the carrier of unhappy news.
  Phil Kane, K2ASP, November 13, 2007
[Bill Ruck indicates that Dane has had three operations
on his leg but is expected to fully recover. CGC wishes Dane
a very successful and speedy recovery. -Ed.]

  CORRECTION
CGC #815 carried a letter indicating that there have been
only three chairmen of the Southern California Frequency
Coordinating Committee (SCFCC). In fact there have been
four. The complete list of chairmen is as follows: Richard
Rudman, Don Wilson, Steve Blodgett and John Russell.

PLEASE HOLD YOUR LETTERS FOR NOW
The CGC Communicator will be reporting less news through
the remainder of 2007 to allow us to catch up on some important
projects. We would appreciate your holding all but the most
important Letters to the Editor during this time. Thanks!

HOW TO IMPROVE BROADCAST EQUIPMENT SHIPPING - TIPS FROM DON
Don Johnson, WD6FWE, has put together some valuable tips
for packing broadcast equipment that is being returned to a
manufacturer for repair. There are simple ways you can box your
equipment so as to avoid in-transit damage, meaning that the
service facility won't have to file an insurance claim and wait
for the adjuster to arrive before repairs begin. See:

  FIRE PHOTOS
Here is a photo sequence (though a bit mixed up time-wise)
of fire rushing up and burning over the top of the Red Mountain
communications site in Fallbrook, CA. The small thumbnail images
were taken with a Web cam mounted at the 40' level of the Cal Fire
tower. The large thumbnails were from a Web camera in the Santa
Margarita Ecological Reserve (SMER), looking south toward Red Mtn.
which, we are told, is pictured on the left. Click on individual
photos to enlarge. The Red Mtn. comm. site survived largely
intact although generator power was required in the aftermath.

  OFF TOPIC
o UCSD's High Performance Wireless Research and Education
Network (HPWREN) captured the Red Mtn. photos mentioned above
and was also used in a number of other fire-related activities.

o The motion-detection feature used with some of the HPWREN
Web cams captures highly unusual images from time to time.
