MAKE THE DTV SWITCH ANYTIME ON JUNE 12, EXCEPT...
If a TV station will be switching to a new DTV channel or
using new facilities (e.g. a new transmitter location or antenna
pattern), they may do so at any time on June 12 provided they
coordinate with any other station/s they may clobber with
interference. Any such station that is unable to successfully
coordinate an early transition time on June 12 must wait until
11:59:59 PM local time to begin operations with their new
facilities.

REVIEWS ON DTV CONVERTER BOXES NEEDED
A previous issue of the CGC Communicator contained a
reference to reviews of DTV converter boxes which were posted
to the WCHS-TV web site. They were thorough and well written,
so I saved the link for future reference.
Now that I want to use this information, they have removed
it. [WCHS replied, "Unfortunately, Bill, our corporate lawyers
ordered the reviews removed from the site."]
Does anyone have a copy of these reviews that they could
share, or know where I could get them? How about some other
similar reviews?

  PLAGUED BY AM BROADCAST INTERFERENCE
Jay Spell, a self-described "spectrum hobbyist," is plagued
by a mysterious source of interference in the AM broadcast band.
He writes that the interference often "obliterates stations very
important to me--KFI, KABC, KFWB and KNX."
The interference "started a little over a year ago when a
re-piping project began here in the [apartment] complex." He
then noticed that the interfering carriers were strongest "next
to enclosures housing water heaters, etc." Edison's RFI
specialist has already determined that SCE's equipment is not
at fault, and the true culprit remains a mystery.
Since many people in the complex are presumably affected
by the interference, it is important to identify the defective
gear and determine if it is (a) malfunctioning or (b) poorly
designed (i.e. non FCC compliant). If the latter, the inter-
ference will spread if similar equipment is installed elsewhere.
Can you help? Jay may be reached at (661) 298-4212 (wired)
or (661) 600-3293 (cell). He lives at 27850 Solamint Road,
Apt. 135, Canyon Country, and his edress is:

  GREAT DTV RECEIVING ANTENNAS
Two DTV receiving antennas that are highly recommended by
Gary Stigall of San Diego SBE Chapter 36 are as follows. The
story first appeared in our newsletter in CGC #894:
  o For UHF (CHs-14 to 51), Gary says he's a real evangelist
for the "Terrestrial Digital 91XG." It has high gain AND
  excellent front-to-back ratio (28 dB):

o For HI-BAND VHF (CHs-7 to 13), Gary recommends the
  following Winegard:

A PROPOSED LAW TO PERMANENTLY BAN TRUCKS ON MT. WILSON
Caltrans is hosting two meetings, June 9 & 10, to discuss
the current truck ban on Angeles Crest Highway (Route 2) leading
to Mounts Wilson and Harvard, see the first URL below.
Vikki Amrine of American Tower adds that, "The truck ban
will have a direct impact on all building owners and broadcasters"
at these locations, and that "legislation is pending for a
permanent ban on all trucks." Thanks to Larry Lopez's company,
you can now follow the e-mail trail concerning this important
topic, see the second URL below.

DTV TRANSITION PHOTOS & STORIES WANTED
Who will push the OFF button on your analog TV transmitter
on June 12? This is an historic event that deserves some careful
thought. The CGC Communicator would like to publish pictures of
this gala event as it takes place at various southern California
transmitter sites.
For example, KFMB-TV, the CBS affiliate in San Diego, made
the DTV switch back on February 17 and provided a wonderful story
along with a photo to commemorate the event (see URL below).
Please send a still photo from your station, along with the
names and titles of the individuals pictured, to Steve Blodgett.
Steve has agreed to Web-post these items so we can reference
them in the CGC Communicator. He can be reached at:
  steve.blodgett (at) earthsignals.com
Don't forget to "reassemble" his disguised e-mail address
by replacing the " (at) " portion with the "@" symbol. You may
include a story along with the photo if you wish. Thanks!
