CGC has confirmed from Graham Breakwell that the Angeles
Crest Highway is closed from La Canada to Big Pines near
Wrightwood. That cuts off access to Red Box junction from
both directions and therefore prevents access to Mt. Wilson.
Graham asks that you NOT contact him (or anyone else at
the Forest Service) re the road closure. This is a Caltrans-
mandated closure; the Forest Service had nothing to do with
it. The local number for Caltrans is:
  (626) 794-7167. The superintendent in charge is Ed Toledo.
According to Steve Wells at Caltrans, Mr. Toledo is in
a meeting downtown today but should be in the office tomorrow
morning at 7:30 AM, so that would be an excellent time for a
representative of the broadcast community to call.
Mr. Wells added that Angeles Crest Highway will probably
be closed until Monday ("it's just too dangerous" after the
last storm). He thought that the County of Los Angeles may
have ordered a closure as well which, if true, would compound
the problem.
Caltrans apparently does not have an e-mail list for road
closure notifications. Word of mouth carried the latest
closure information to Graham's desk. So, bringing Caltrans
into the 21st Century is yet another challenge.
